Modern Foreign Languages

Modern Foreign Languages (French) at Our School

At our school, we believe that learning a foreign language helps children develop curiosity about the world, respect for other cultures and confidence in communication. Our Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) curriculum focuses on French and is delivered using the Kapow Primary French scheme.

Why We Teach French

Learning French supports children in developing key language skills that will benefit them throughout their education and beyond. It helps pupils to:

  • Communicate ideas in another language

  • Improve listening and speaking skills

  • Develop reading and writing skills

  • Gain insight into other cultures and traditions

What is Kapow Primary French?

Kapow Primary French is a progressive, National Curriculum aligned scheme designed specifically for primary schools. Lessons are engaging, interactive and carefully sequenced to build confidence and competence as pupils move through Key Stage 2.

Our French Curriculum

Through Kapow Primary, pupils develop skills in:

  • Listening - understanding spoken French through songs, stories and conversations

  • Speaking - using accurate pronunciation and intonation to communicate confidently

  • Reading - recognising and understanding familiar words and phrases

  • Writing - writing simple words, phrases and sentences using taught vocabulary

Pupils also learn about French culture, including traditions, celebrations and everyday life.

Inclusive and Engaging Lessons

French lessons are designed to be fun, practical and accessible for all learners. Activities include games, songs, role play and interactive tasks, helping children build confidence and enjoyment in language learning.

Assessment and Progress

Assessment in French is ongoing and supportive. Teachers monitor pupils’ progress in language skills and vocabulary acquisition, ensuring lessons build effectively on prior learning.

Preparing Pupils for the Future

Our aim is to equip pupils with a strong foundation in language learning, enabling a smooth transition to secondary school and fostering a lifelong interest in languages and cultures.
