Geography at Our School

At our school, our Geography curriculum inspires curiosity and fascination about the world around us - from our local community to distant places and environments. Using the Kapow Primary Geography Scheme of Work, we ensure that pupils develop a deep understanding of the physical and human processes that shape our planet, alongside the skills to think like geographers.

What is Kapow Geography?

Kapow Geography is a carefully designed, knowledge-rich geography scheme of work that supports high-quality teaching and learning across primary schools. It is fully aligned with the National Curriculum for Geography and places equal emphasis on locational knowledge, place knowledge, human and physical geography, and geographical skills and fieldwork.

For mixed-age classes, Kapow provides a spiral curriculum, allowing pupils of different ages to study the same theme while developing age-appropriate knowledge and skills. This ensures clear progression without unnecessary repetition, supporting both younger and older learners within the same class.

Kapow Geography also places strong emphasis on:

  • Real-world contexts that make learning relevant and engaging

  • Fieldwork opportunities in the local area

  • Map skills and geographical tools, including digital mapping

  • Sustainability and environmental responsibility

Through Kapow Geography, pupils develop a deep understanding of the world, their place within it, and the skills needed to explore and care for it.

Our Geography Curriculum

Through engaging and purposeful learning, pupils will:

  • Explore places with curiosity and respect - learning about the UK and the wider world.

  • Understand physical and human geography - including landscapes, climates, settlements and the relationship between people and the environment.

  • Develop geographical knowledge and skills - including map work, fieldwork, data interpretation and geographical enquiry.

  • Build awareness of sustainability and global citizenship - nurturing a sense of responsibility for our planet.

 How We Teach Geography

1. Enquiry-Led Learning

Pupils learn by asking questions, investigating real-world issues and thinking critically about geographical ideas. Topics are structured around clear “Investigate” and “Reflect” outcomes, ensuring purposeful learning that deepens understanding over time.

2. Progressive Knowledge and Skills

Our curriculum builds knowledge and skills systematically through each year group. Pupils return to key concepts, explore them in increasing depth and make meaningful links across topics and age bands.

3. Strong Focus on Fieldwork

Fieldwork is an essential part of geography. Pupils regularly conduct observations and data collection in their local environment — for example, mapping the school grounds, surveying land use, or comparing weather patterns.

4. Map Skills and Geographical Tools

From simple plans to OS maps, globes to digital mapping, pupils are supported to use a range of geographical tools with confidence. They learn to read, interpret and create maps and diagrams to communicate findings.

5. Locational Knowledge

Across the primary years, pupils build secure knowledge of place and space, including:

  • Continents and oceans

  • Countries of the UK and major world regions

  • Key physical features such as rivers, mountains and climate zones

  • Human features such as cities, land use and transport

Geography helps pupils make sense of the dynamic world they live in. It encourages:

  • Curiosity about the world and people within it

  • Critical thinking and reasoning skills

  • An understanding of environmental challenges

  • Responsibility for sustainable futures

We are proud to help our learners become active, informed citizens who can think geographically and engage with the world around them.
