Design and Technology

Design and Technology at Our School

At our school, Design and Technology (DT) encourages children to become creative problem solvers who can think imaginatively and work practically. Our DT curriculum is taught using the Kapow Primary Design and Technology scheme, which provides a structured, progressive and engaging approach to learning.

What is Kapow Primary Design and Technology?

Kapow Primary Design and Technology is a National Curriculum aligned scheme that supports children in developing technical knowledge, creativity and practical skills. Lessons are carefully sequenced to build understanding and confidence as pupils move through the school.

Our Design and Technology Curriculum

Through Kapow Primary, pupils follow the design, make and evaluate process, learning to:

  • Design purposeful, functional and appealing products for a range of users

  • Make products using tools, equipment and materials safely and effectively

  • Evaluate their ideas and finished products, suggesting improvements

Children also develop technical knowledge in areas such as structures, mechanisms, textiles, electrical systems and food and nutrition.

Practical and Hands On Learning

DT lessons are practical, engaging and purposeful. Pupils are encouraged to investigate existing products, develop their own ideas, and apply their skills to real life problems, building resilience and independence.

Cooking and Nutrition

As part of the DT curriculum, children learn about food and nutrition, including where food comes from, how to prepare simple dishes safely, and the importance of a healthy and balanced diet.

Inclusion and Creativity

Kapow Primary DT supports inclusive teaching by offering adaptable lessons that meet the needs of all learners. Every child is encouraged to be creative, take risks and take pride in their work.

Assessment and Progress

Assessment in DT is ongoing and supportive. Teachers assess children’s skills, knowledge and understanding through observation, discussion and completed projects, ensuring progression across year groups.

Preparing Children for the Future

Our aim is for children to leave primary school with the confidence, skills, creativity and resilience to solve problems, make informed choices and understand how design and technology impacts the world around them.
