Wolverton Primary School

Music

A high-quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement.

The National Curriculum for music aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • perform, listen to, review and evaluate music, including the works of the great composers and musicians.
  • learn to sing and use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument (children have the opportunity to have individual tuition within school playing the clarinet, flute and violin) and use technology appropriately.
  • understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the interrelated dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.

Within Key Stage 1 pupils should be taught to play tuned and unturned percussion musically.
Within Key Stage 2 pupils use and understand staff and other musical notations and develop an understanding of the history of music.

At Wolverton, music is taught as a separate subject using ‘Charanga’ as a framework to deliver high quality sequenced lessons that demonstrate progression of skills across the school. Music lessons follow half termly units of work. Within each unit, pupils are given the opportunity to listen and appraise, engage in musical activities and perform and share their own compositions.

In addition to class music lessons, pupils in Year 2 and above have the opportunity to have instrumental music tuition.  All our instrumental lessons are delivered during the school day by music specialists provided by Warwickshire music service. There is a charge for the music tuition which is payable on a termly basis and the cost is dependent on the amount of time required and the number of children in each group.
