Class 1
Welcome to Reception!
Our Reception children enjoy a year full of interesting and exciting opportunities. To learn by playing and exploring, being active and thinking critically and creatively both indoors and in our outdoor area.
We support the children in their independent play and through adult led activities to develop their understanding, vocabulary, skills and knowledge through a wide variety of playful and hands on experiences.
This Term in Reception
The children have had a busy term of learning so far in Reception. We started off the summer term by reading Handa's Surprise and learning all about Africa. We discussed what was similar and different between Africa and where we live. We also had fun tasting different types of fruit and creating tally charts to see which was the most popular. Then we read Martha Maps it Out and learnt all about maps and where we live. We looked at maps of our local area and write fact-files about England.
After half term we came back raring to go and have been looking at different traditional tales and popular stories. So far we have read Little Red Riding Hood, and have enjoyed making wolf faces and describing the Big Bad Wolf. Next we will be enjoying The Gruffalo, and learning all about speech. We will also be making some tasty Gruffalo Crumble during healthy eating week.

Supporting your child's learning at home
Homework is set each Friday to be returned the following Friday. It gives the children the opportunity to practice their learning in class and share the interesting things they have learnt that week with you.
Please send your child to school with their book bag every day.
Phonics
Phonics homework will consolidate your child’s learning in class and give them the opportunity to show you their new skills. Reading books are also closely linked to their phonics learning in school.
Reading books
Each week the children bring home a class library book for you to enjoy together. When the children are ready they will also bring home reading books that they can read to their family.
Please return reading books and library books to school on a Friday. New books will be given out the same day.
Maths
Each child has their own account on Numbots. The games and challenges help to build the children’s speed and confidence in working with numbers. The children will also have an activity or game each week to support their learning in class.
Topic
From time to time the children will be asked to complete an activity linked to our topic work.
Ted the bear
Each week a different child will bring Ted home for the weekend. On Monday your child can share the activities they did with Ted using the scrapbook.
PE and Forest School
We have PE sessions on Monday and Thursday. Please can children come to school in their PE kit. PE kit is blue or black shorts or jogging bottoms, white PE t-shirt, blue school jumper and trainers/pumps.
Forest school sessions are on a Wednesday afternoon. Please ensure your children have wellies and a waterproof coat in school on these days. They can also wear either leggings or jogging bottoms, with their normal school t-shirt and cardigan/jumper.
Snacks
Please send your child to school with a water bottle. This will be kept in school during the week and replenished daily or more often as required. We will send the water bottle home on a Friday for a thorough clean.
We all sit together at the table to enjoy snack. The children have a choice of fruits and vegetables each day. They are also able to have a glass of milk or water. Children under 5 are entitled to free milk, and others may purchase milk; parents are required to sign up for this via the Coolmilk website.
