Art and Design at Our School
At our school, we value Art and Design as a vital part of a broad and balanced curriculum. Through high quality art education, children are encouraged to be creative, express themselves and develop confidence in their own ideas. Our Art and Design curriculum is taught using the Kapow Primary Art & Design scheme.
What is Kapow Primary Art & Design?
Kapow Primary Art & Design is a progressive, skills-based scheme aligned with the National Curriculum. It supports pupils in developing creativity, technical skills and critical thinking while exploring a wide range of artistic styles, techniques and artists.
Our Art and Design Curriculum
Through Kapow Primary, pupils develop knowledge and skills across five key areas:
-
Drawing - developing mark-making skills using a range of materials
-
Painting - exploring colour, tone, texture and different painting techniques
-
Sculpture and 3D - working with a variety of materials to create three-dimensional artwork
-
Printmaking - experimenting with pattern, texture and repeated designs
-
Textiles and Collage - using fabric and mixed media to create expressive pieces
Children also learn about significant artists, designers and craftspeople, helping them to understand how art has developed over time and across different cultures.
Skills, Creativity and Evaluation
Art and Design lessons encourage children to:
-
Experiment with materials and techniques
-
Develop their own creative ideas
-
Evaluate and reflect on their work and the work of others
-
Use subject-specific vocabulary confidently
This helps pupils build resilience, independence and pride in their achievements.
Inclusion and Enjoyment
Kapow Primary Art & Design promotes inclusive practice by providing adaptable lessons that allow all children to access learning and succeed, regardless of their prior experience or ability.
Assessment and Progress
Assessment in Art and Design is ongoing and supportive. Teachers assess children’s skills, creativity and understanding through observation, discussion and completed work, ensuring clear progression across the school.
Inspiring Creativity for Life
Our aim is for children to leave primary school with a strong foundation in artistic skills, a love of creativity and the confidence to express themselves through art.
